Effective January 1, 2021, Connecticut’s Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (the Act) will go into effect. The Act provides Connecticut workers the opportunity to take time off to attend to personal and family health needs without worrying about lost income. Employers must take action prior to January 2021.
Beginning November 1, 2020, employers can begin the process of registering with the CT Paid Leave Authority. Sole proprietors have the option of opting in. CironeFriedberg recommends Connecticut employers check with their payroll service providers to verify if the payroll service will address registering with the CT Paid Leave Authority or if the employer needs to take action. The Connecticut Paid Leave website provides a Guide for Employers with step-by-step instructions and more information.
Beginning January 1, 2021, employers must begin to withhold employee contributions at a rate of ½ of 1% of gross wages and remit to the CT Paid Leave Authority Trust Fund.
